There shouldn't be a hardware issue. That sounds 100% like the LCD. The phone should function correctly after getting that replaced. Seeing as the LCD is part of the hardware, I'd say you do in fact have a hardware issue. Yeah this happened to me a while back when water dropped into a crack on my screen.
